This week, I was determined to learn how to do long division. It's quite weird at first. But when you get the hang of it, it's quite straight-forward.
Here is an example. What is 4698 divided by 3?
Well, there are many ways to do this.
This first is to pick up a calculator and type in 4598÷3. But that's too easy!!!
The second way is to try to guess it. But you'll probably be wrong:)
There is another way which is suppppppper fun if you love long division or math! You go like this:
3⟌4698
Here are the steps:
a) First divide 4/3. The answer is 1 with remainder 1 (for example: 1R1).
You then put the first 1 above the 4, and the second 1 in “superscript” to the left of the 5.
You then put the first 1 above the 4, and the second 1 in “superscript” to the left of the 5.
1
3⟌41698
b) Then you divide 16/3. The answer is 5 with remainder 1 (for example: 5R1).
You then put the first 5 above the 16 and the 1 in “superscript” to the left of the 9.
Do you get the pattern now? If you don’t read it again.
You then put the first 5 above the 16 and the 1 in “superscript” to the left of the 9.
Do you get the pattern now? If you don’t read it again.
1 5
3⟌416198
c) Now you divide 19/3. The answer is 6R1. Let us put that in now.
1 5 6
3⟌4161918
d) Now you divide 18/3, which is EXACTLY 6!! (That was a fluke to get it without a remainder).
1 5 6 6
3⟌4161918
e) So what’s the answer?! IT’S 1566 !!!! WOW! Now you can check it on your calculator.
